So you want to use all these ideas, but you don't have the equipment?

Don't be discouraged if you don't yet have access to the equipment you need.  Take action!!

Your school district gets technology money from the state per student every year.  If they purchase equipment through BOCES, they get a large percentage back the following year to put in their general fund -- this may be 80% or more.

Talk to your administrators---show them how this technology can transform a classroom.

Getting Started

If you already have a projector in your classroom hooked up to a computer, all you need is AirServer downloaded to your computer.  When buying in quantity, it is only $3.  Your IT department will have to put your classroom computer on the Wi-Fi network.

With an iPad on the same Wi-Fi, you can project your iPad and walk around the room. If you have the SMART Notebook app, you can use your SMART notebook files on your iPad--it's like taking your SMARTboard off the wall.  (NOTE: The flash files in SMART notebook will not play on the iPad.)

With an iPad Arm, you can turn the iPad camera into a document camera.  The iPad also has a built in video camer and still camera.

Next Steps

To really transform classrooms into learner-centered classrooms, the students need to have a device that accesses the internet.

This can be a netbook, laptop, tablet (like iPad), SMART phone, iPod, etc.

Use apps/websites like Infuse Learning, Socrative, or Nearpod for fast feedback, and you won't need clickers which can be costly for every classroom.

Check your district acceptable use policy and talk to your principal.  Many of your students already have SMART phones, iPods, iPads, etc.  Some districts will let students use them in class at the teacher's discretion.  In fact, by taking their phones out of their pockets and putting them ON TOP of their desks, you have more control than if they are in their pockets.

Maybe your district could help you supplement student devices with district devices for students without them. Talk to your administrators. Apply for grants.
